All About Crabs

Yesterday when I went to the research facility I learned a lot. One of the experiments that they are doing is to see if small fish grow slower with big fish in the same tank. There are twelve tanks. Three tanks with all small fish. Three with medium. Three with large fish. Three with small, medium, and large fish together. They feed all of the tanks the same amount of food. So far it looks like they are all growing at the same rate even the mixed tanks. The small fish just start out small.

Today we went crabbing with the professional crabber we met yesterday. We went from ten in the morning until one in the afternoon. The whole time it was raining HARD! I still had loads of fun though. We were catching two types of crabs, Blue Crabs and Stone Crabs. We would keep the whole blue crab and only take one of the stone crab's claws. If a stone crab only had one claw we would throw it back. When we finished we had three big buckets of blue crabs and eight big stone crab claws. Roe are crab eggs. One female crab can produce one million roe. They mate right after they shed.

When I grow up I might become a professional crabber. We will see.

  1. Gotta love the boots!

Hey, Ryan, you are getting taller every time we see you in a photo! Wonder if you'll be as tall as me when we see you this summer?!?

    Great information on crabbing. Thanks!
